Fluffy’s Cutest 2025 Resolutions

January 1, 2025

Happy Mew Year! As we leave 2024 behind us and move into 2025, our feline companions are pouncing into the new year alongside us. Fluffy will most likely continue to pounce until 2026. What do you suppose is on your cat’s agenda? In this article, a local Rockbridge, VA veterinarian discusses some feline New Year’s Resolutions.

Get More Sleep

You’ve likely noticed that our feline pals are … somewhat drowsy. Fluffy can sleep up to 20 hours a day! That may sound excessive, especially given that many cats spend their waking hours eating, grooming, and lounging, but kitties don’t appear to mind.

You may help your cat achieve this aim by providing her with plenty of comfortable bedding to curl up (or spread out in). Store-bought beds are just fine, but your pet will probably not reject a nice folded blanket or a cushion placed on an ottoman, in a box, or basket. (She might also sleep on your shoe or in your houseplant, but that’s another story.)

Take Control of Humans

Has your pet trained you to feed her on demand? If she brushes on your legs, do you give her a reward or pick her up? If your feline ruler does not have you fully trained in these areas, she may want to work on that.

Conquer All Of The Sunbeams

Have you ever found your sleeping pet stretched out in a sunbeam? It would not be surprising if you did. Cats enjoy seeking out warm locations for their sleep. This makes sense. Kittens are not able to regulate their own body temperature until they are around a month old. Instead, they seek comfort by snuggling with their littermates. Even when they can run their own furnaces, they never lose the desire to snuggle up in cozy napping locations. This is why they are drawn to not only sunbeams, but also warm laundry baskets, our laps, and areas near heaters or fires.

Improve Sprint Times

Does your cat occasionally run from the living room to the kitchen at full speed? She may want to improve her racing times this year!

Complete World Dominance

Cats may be little, but should not be underestimated. After all, they convinced the ancient Egyptians to regard them as deities. Plus, if you think about it, Fluffy controls a significant portion of the internet. Your furry friend could be trying to take over the universe! (Or, at least the living room.)

Work On Flexibility

Our feline companions are infamous for napping in positions typically reserved for pretzels and knots. There are several valid reasons for this. Their clavicles are held together by muscle and sinew, not bone. They also have more space between their vertebrae, allowing them to twist and turn. Fluffy may wish to work on some new combinations this year.

Purrfect The Pounce

Did you know that playing is good for your cat’s mind and body? Pouncing, running, and jumping all provide excellent kitty workouts. This will help Fluffy stay fit and active as she ages. It can also aid in the fight against obesity, which is responsible for a wide range of feline health issues. Playing is also a terrific way to bond.  Last but not least, kitty play sessions provide cerebral stimulation. That’s good for your pet’s brain and can help prevent cognitive decline as she ages. Consider this a feline version of solving a crossword puzzle.

Master The Wormhole

Have you ever found Fluffy in one place when you thought she was somewhere else? Have you ever wondered how your cat got to a specific area without your knowledge? The answer may be found in quantum physics. We have not yet proven that cats can move across dimensions. However, we have our suspicions.

(We also have questions concerning the Cat Universal Distribution System, but that is another matter.)

Catch That Red Dot (Maybe)

Fluffy has been attempting to get that elusive red dot for years! Maybe 2025 is the year she gets it!

Evict The Dog

Fluffy and Fido have had a difficult relationship throughout the years. In some circumstances, they have formed rapid friendships. In other households, they fight like, well, cats and dogs. While this may not be true for all of our feline patients, it’s safe to assume that at least a few of them would gladly bid their canine housemates adieu.

Conquer All Boxes

We have learned a lot about kitties in recent years. Fluffy’s fondness of boxes is something we may never fully understand. From a scientific standpoint, this is most likely due to cats’ tendency to feel safe and secure in small settings. This makes sense. However, it does not explain why cats can’t resist boxes that are either too big or too little. Fluffy will even curl up inside a ‘box’, which is actually just a square of tape on the floor.

Regardless of her motivation, your feline ruler will most likely love it if you offer her any of the empty boxes left over from the holidays.

Avoid Trips To The Clinic

Most of our patients would rather take another nap than come to see us. We understand! Even the drive to the clinic can be stressful for cats. Regardless of Fluffy’s feelings on the issue, regular visits will make her happier—and hence healthier.

Your cat’s needs will change with time. Kittens will need to come in for several appointments. If your pet is still a baby, this year’s agenda includes initial inspections, microchipping, spay/neuter surgery, and initial immunizations and boosters. Adults should come in once a year, but seniors should visit more frequently. Between checkups, you should keep a close eye out for signs of disease. Some of these symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, untidy fur, fever, lethargy, and a loss of appetite. If you detect anything incorrect, contact your Rockbridge, VA veterinarian straight away.
